Target your job search to a specific industry

Do you have experience, knowledge or passion in a specific industry and niche?

→ Explore that and make it one of the focus of you job search!

💡 Applying to those companies will be easier: more targeted, appealing and motivating, while your profile will stand out from the crowd compared to many other applicants even with more experience, but in other fields!

What to do and how?

Here are a few ideas and tips of steps to follow.

  1. Pick a niche. Be specific! See here some examples.
  2. Write down 5 reasons why you choose that and why you will be a great candidate. This will be super useful when reaching out to them!
  3. Put on your investigator heat! 🕵️
    1. Search for companies, associations, groups, communities.. operating in that industry (see some inspiration below here)

    2. Create a list of companies in your area & country

    3. Search for industry related events, conferences, meetups and add up your list of companies + create a list of professionals in the field.

See here lists of companies and professionals:

      Companies in specific industries

    4. 💡TIP: sometimes events in the fields are expensive and you might not be ready to invest on that yet… search their website anyway, look at their content, at their programme to learn what are the topics of the moment, who are the speakers and experts in the industry.

  4. Get into action: write to companies and reach out to professionals
    1. Follow the targeted companies on Linkedin to be updated on their new posts and jobs
    2. Go on these companies website, search for the career page: anything interesting? If not yet, add the career page link into your file and plan in your calendar to check the page every 2-3 weeks for new openings. (you might end up being one of the first to see the job offers!)
    3. Some companies have a dedicated email for general or unsolicited applications: why not trying this route? (Read more about this here)
    4. Make a plan on how to reach out to the professionals in the field.
